Reuben was born in 1758 to James Seay and Lucy Lewis in Amelia County, Virgina. He married Mary Ann Jones in1780 Amelia County, Virginia. Reuben and his family moved to what is now Spartanburg County, South Carolina in 1805. He was a farmer and attended the Baptist Church. Mary Ann and Reuben had fourteen children. [1]

Reuben fought in the Revolutionary War and was blinded when struck by cannonball at siege of Little York, Pigeon Hill, Virginia.[2]

Reuben Seay Sr. was an Artillery Private with the Virginia State Line during the Revolutionary War. He was wounded at the Battle of Yorktown, Virginia. An Affidavit duly sworn on Dec. 29, 1845, states "Rueben Seay was at the seige of Little York (Yorktown) and was in an entrenchment when the walls blew out, injuring Rueben Seay's eyes sorely. His eyes grew worse until within a few years he lost sight completely, and remained blind until his death.

Mathew Seay made an affidavit, dated November 20, 1847 stating his father came to Spartanburg County from Amelia County, Virginia in the year 1805. He also swears to the date of the death of his father. giving as reasons for remembering the date as being a few days before he and Prestly Ballenger commenced a mill dam. In a statement sworn before open court in Spartanburg, he states he was 56 years of age in 1846, and that three children older than Mathew, and seven younger, survived the father Reuben Seay.

State of South Carolina Spartanburg District: On this 7th day of October 1846 personally appeared in open Court now opened and held at the Court House in Spartanburg District, Mathew Seay a resident of said District, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July the 4th 1836 that he is the son and one of the heirs at law of Mary Ann Seay who was the widow of Reuben Seay who was a private Soldier of the Artillery in the Virginia line and served the United States against the Common Enemy but did not draw a pension but served as the Heirs do understand nearly all through the war, this Claimant further declares as he understood that she the aforesaid Mary Ann Seay was married to said Reuben Seay sometime in the year 1780 and that her husband the aforesaid Reuben Seay died on the 19th day of March 1833 and that the aforesaid Mary Ann Seay died on the 16th day of March 1845 and that she remained a widow ever since the death of the aforesaid Reuben Seay this Claimant further declares that he knows of no Record of the marriage of the said Reuben & Mary Ann Seay, this deponent further declares that all the Heirs at law that survived the said Mary Ann Seay are Hezekiah Seay, Mary Bishop, Martha Brannon, Matthew Seay, Samuel Seay, Sarah Taylor, Judah Brannon, Lewis Seay, Elizabeth Dancy, Lucy Blackwell, Reuben Seay and that the [they] are all of full age and that the [they] all reside in Spartanburg, except Hezekiah Seay & Reuben Seay the [they] both reside in Tennessee and Lucy Blackwell and Mary Taylor live in Georgia.

This is to Certify, That it appears from a List in this Office of such Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia State Line, during the Revolutionary War, as settled their Accounts, and received Certificates for the balance of their Full Pay, according to an Act of Assembly, passed the November Session 1781, that a Certificate issued on the 4th day of August 1783, in the name of Reubin Seay as a Soldier of artillery for £83.7.4, which Certificate appears to have been delivered to Mr. Banks and was given for services prior to the 1st January 1782.
Given under my hand, at the Auditor's Office, Richmond, this 3rd day of December 1845.

State of North Carolina Caswell County: October 9th day 1847 personally appeared before me Philip Honnett an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid Starling Gunn1 a resident of Caswell County and made oath in due form of law and saith on oath that he was acquainted with Rheubin Seay of Amelia County Virginia and that he and the said Rheubin Seay did serve together under Captain Anderson, Colonel Mathis, Colonel Holt Richarson [Holt Richeson or Richardson], General Lawson, Major Martin he further states that he well remembers serving that one tour with Rheubin Seay and that they were together at Pigeon Hill near Little York sitting conversing together in the intrenchment at that place when a Cannon ball struck the bankment [sic] and it shocked Rheubin Seay he further states that he understood that said Rheubin Seay was in the hospital afterwards he states that this occurred a short time before the taking of Little York and that he and the said Rheubin Seay were was not together anymore.

State of North Carolina Caswell County: On this 2nd day of October 1848 Personally appeared before me James Currie one of the acting Justices of the Peace in and for said County Mr. Sterling Gunn of said County who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following affidavit to wit. That he was well acquainted with Reuben Seay late of Spartanburg District South Carolina Deceased in the Days of the Revolution whose heirs have made application for the pension which was due there father the aforesaid Reuben Seay on account of his Service in said Revolution. That he the Deponent Gunn was a Soldier in said war under one Captain Anderson Colonel Mathis & Colonel Robert Richardson Regiment General Lawson's Brigade & that he the said Reuben Seay served as follows to wit under the same officer, he further declares that the said Reuben Seay was a Soldier under Colonel Mathis, Colonel Ritcherson [sic] Regiment, General Lawson's Brigade. This he the Deponent does well know he being a citizen of Amelia County & said R. Seay a Citizen of the same, he further declares that he understood that said Seay was in the Hospital after that from a Shock received at Pigeon Hill near York town he further declares that the above is a true statement of the Service of the said R. Seay.

Hicks one of the acting Magistrates in and for the District and State aforesaid James Seay2 after being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following affidavit and saith on oath that he was well acquainted with the said Rheubin Seay in the State of Virginia Amelia County and that the said Rheubin Seay did enlist in the Virginia line and served as a regular in the that State for two years and was one of [indecipherable word or words] and was at the siege of Little York and he the said Rheubin Seay were in the entrenchments and by the blowing out the walls he the said R. Seay got his eyes [indecipherable word] affected and he still grew worse till in a few years he the said Rheubin Seay fully lost his sight and remained blind until his death. Reuben died March 19, 1833 and was buried at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. A memorial marker was erected in his honor.[4] [5]
